Do you own property in the Bundaberg Regional Council area?
If you reside in this region and aren’t connected to a municipal sewage treatment network, you may need a Home Sewage Treatment Plant (HSTP) installed.
Property owners must know their responsibilities and obligations when managing sewage on their land. The local council has specific HSTP requirements that must be followed to ensure that the environment and public health are protected.
This article will provide an overview of the local HSTP requirements for the Bundaberg Region, including who is responsible for the system, instalment requirements and caring for your system.
On-Site Sewerage facility maintenance requirements for Bundaberg Region
According to Bundaberg Regional Council website, the property owner is responsible for maintaining an on-site sewerage facility as stipulated in the Plumbing and Drainage Act 2018 .
Follow manufacturers guidelines
The on-site septic system must be regularly maintained in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications and official permission stipulations.
Repairs from licensed service agents
A licensed service agent must perform routine repairs and report on the performance of the site-specific sewage system.
The service technician who maintains the treatment plant must hold a current license in one of the following three areas issued under the Plumbing and Drainage Act 2018:
- Plumber and drainer’s license with an on-site sewerage facility endorsement;
- Drainers licence only with an on-site sewerage facility endorsements; or
- Restricted drainer’s licence for on-site sewerage facility (with ‘maintain’ condition stated on the licence)
Quarterly maintenance
On-site sewage plumbing systems sometimes necessitate maintenance every 3 months. State law requires that a component be serviced as recommended by the manufacturer s specification.
The good news? Unlike a regular system, Ecosafe only legally requires 1 annual service due to the high-quality effluent our systems produce – this makes it one of the cheapest HSTP Systems to run.
Miscellaneous requirements
In addition to the above,
- Be sure the plumbing system in your home does not negatively impact the performance of your on-site sewerage system.
- Contact your service agent if you have any questions, or refer to the owner’s manual or our do and don’t fact sheet.
- Older houses present a septic tank and a greywater reservoir known as a sullage system that must be pumped.
More maintenance information can be found on their website here.
